Johannesburg had a special glow on 22–23 November 2025 when South Africa hosted the G20 Summit for the very first time!

It was a meaningful moment for the country, and a proud one for everyone who calls South Africa home. With the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’, the gathering focused on ideas that touch everyday life: from clean energy to fairer opportunities and long-term stability.

For many of us in the Indian-South African community, it felt personal. South Africa and India have shared warm ties for generations, and seeing both countries at the table brought a sense of connection and belonging.

The discussions this year highlighted areas that matter to people across both nations:
• practical steps toward cleaner, more reliable energy
• support for local business through fairer global trade
• food security and climate resilience
• responsible use of critical minerals
• a stronger voice for developing nations

Even with global disagreements, the summit still ended with a joint declaration, which was encouraging in itself.

India contributed thoughtful ideas, including a focus on sustainability, inclusive growth, and a global repository for traditional knowledge. It was a reminder that heritage and innovation can work hand in hand.

One moment that stood out for our community was the chance, brief but memorable, to meet Prime Minister Modi during the summit. Having that photograph later appear on his official social media platforms was an unexpected honour, and it highlighted the presence and spirit of the Indian diaspora in South Africa.

For many families in our community, the themes discussed at the summit reflect conversations we already have at home: opportunities for the next generation, rising costs, access to green jobs, and how traditions continue to connect us across continents.

As the dust settles on an unforgettable summit, it leaves behind a quiet sense of pride and possibility. South Africa hosted with confidence. India participated with purpose. And our community continues to bridge cultures and contribute to both countries we care about. Moments like these remind us how connected we are, how far we’ve come, and how much promise lives in the ties between India and South Africa.
