Festive Vibes Loading: Navratri to Diwali
Ganesh Utsav was just the start. Now comes that time of year when every week feels like a reason to dress up, eat well, dance a little longer, and soak in the joy of community.
Navratri (22 Sept – 2 Oct)
Nine nights of music, rhythm, and colour. Think swirling garba circles, dandiya sticks clicking in beat, and outfits that sparkle brighter than the lights. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the magic of dancing till your feet give up, this is it! Each night carries its own energy, with songs, steps, and devotion that build into something unforgettable. By the last night, it feels less like a dance and more like being part of something bigger.
Dussehra (2 Oct)
The big reminder that good always wins. Effigies of Ravana are brought down, and with them, the reminder that pride and dishonesty never last. Families come together, elders share stories from the Ramayana, and children see what it means to hold onto truth and courage. It’s a tradition passed down for centuries, one that still feels fresh each year, about keeping alive the values that hold a community strong.
Karwa Chauth (10 Oct)
Karwa Chauth is a celebration of love, devotion, and the bond of marriage. The day begins with prayers at dawn. Women fast all day for their husbands’ long life, a symbol of patience, care, and devotion, and get ready in their finest outfits, mehndi on their hands, jewellery sparkling. In the evening, they sit in a circle for the Karwa Chauth katha, rotating thalis and praying together. When the moon finally rises, later than usual, as guided by the Indian Panchang, the wait turns into a moment of gratitude and warmth. Women offer prayers while looking at the moon through a sieve, then at their husbands, who offer water and something sweet to their wives, marking the end of the fast. The day ends with a joyful meal, celebrating the love and devotion that strengthen their bond.
Bollywood may have brought it into the spotlight, but the real magic lies in the quiet strength, trust, and care shared between partners.
Diwali (20 Oct)
The one everyone waits for. Preparations start weeks, even months ahead: homes get a good spring clean, symbolising clearing out the old to welcome the new; mithai is made in kitchens buzzing with activity; and families plan menus, gifts, and decorations with so much love. By the time Diwali night arrives, houses glow with diyas and fairy lights, rangolis brighten doorsteps, and trays of sweets are passed around with laughter. Some traditions may vary, but everywhere the emotion is the same: Diwali is pure magic, a season of togetherness that makes all the effort so worth it.
This Season Is Special
It’s more than dates on a calendar - it’s the sparkle of outfits, the scent of sweets, the laughter of family and friends, and the joy of shared prayers and celebrations. Whether fasting, dancing, or enjoying festive meals, every moment is full of love and devotion.
Even far from India, this festive season travels with us. From Durban to Joburg to Cape Town, it’s a time to celebrate traditions, love, and togetherness - keeping the magic alive wherever we are. 🧡
